With the advancement in the field of IT, there is a gradual shift from manual to automation testing, we can see new positions coming up and one such role is of SDET. A Software Development/Design Engineer in Test (SDET) is an IT professional who works for both, development and testing of the software. An SDET is also responsible for reviewing the design and the processes involved in the software product.
SDET should be capable of performing test automation, set up frameworks on application platforms such as web, mobile, and desktop. The SDET professional is also responsible for investigating the problems faced by the customer as guided by the technical support team. SDET is required to create as well as manage bug reports. They also need to manage the technical communication with clients and work with deployment teams.
The candidate applying for the role of SDET should have enough knowledge about .NET, C#, Java or other programming languages. The candidate should be well versed with “AGILE + DevOps” process management methodology. Thorough knowledge about tools such as MS Test, Selenium WebDriver, NUnit, TestNG, etc is required. The candidate should be efficient enough to figure out the bugs and prepare a bug report based on that.
The role is often misunderstood as that of a tester, let’s see how SDET is different from a tester. A SDET has both development as well as testing skills whereas a tester has limited programming skills and focuses on black box/ functional testing. SDET work as a tester as well as a developer. SDET can take part in test automation tool development but it is not expected from testers to develop test automation tools. Instead they can automate the test cases with the help of these test automation tools.
SDETs are preferred because of their dual abilities to develop as well as test software. As they hace more knowledge than the testers, they improve the code quality by performing detailed source code reviews and they also check the Testability of the code.
